Island hopping from Mactan: Hilutungan, Nalusuan and Caohagan compared

4 min read

Outrigger boat floating above clear turquoise water beside a small tropical island

For most first-time visitors, choose a three-island trip with a named fish sanctuary and lunch. It gives you a full day on the water without pretending that every stop offers the same thing. Hilutungan (Gilutungan in some listings) and Nalusuan are marine-sanctuary reef stops; Caohagan, the third island on both named three-island trips, is a small inhabited island with a fishing village, where the stop is more about the village and beach than the reef. Routes change with sea conditions, so treat the stop list as an itinerary, not a guarantee.

The strongest all-round option

The three-island trip with San Vicente Fish Sanctuary and lunch lasts 8 hours, costs €103.21 and is rated 4.7 from 223 reviews. It has the largest review base among the dedicated Mactan island-hopping options. The long duration makes sense if island hopping is your main activity, but it is a poor fit before an evening flight.

Cebu Province reports more than 500 kilometres of coastline and 167 islands and cays. That scale explains why “island hopping” is not one fixed circuit. Confirm the actual departure point in Lapu-Lapu City, hotel transfer area, snorkelling equipment, marine fees and whether drinks beyond lunch are included.

Two shorter alternatives

The three-island trip with BBQ lunch takes 7 hours, costs €104.85 and has 4.6 stars from 86 reviews. The Cebu island-hopping trip with lunch takes 6 hours, costs €110.45 and is rated 4.7 from 82 reviews. Those one- and two-hour differences matter if you are staying in Cebu City and must also cross to Mactan.

Do not choose only by the number of islands. A useful reef stop needs time for briefing, fitting equipment and entering the water; three rushed landings can be less satisfying than two unhurried stops. Non-swimmers should ask about life jackets and whether they can remain comfortably on the boat.

Recommendation

Pick the eight-hour San Vicente route for the clearest combination of review history, snorkelling and lunch. Choose the six-hour option when schedule matters more than maximum water time. This is a boat day, so there is no honest reason to add a rental-car link: transfers and the precise jetty matter more than having your own vehicle.
